Barcelona’s answer to Prosecco, Cava takes its origins in this very region and forms a large part of its rich gastronomy. The name itself comes from the Catalan word for the caves where the drink was first stored during the fermentation process.
Following an outbreak of phyllorexa in the mid 1800s, many wine producers turned to white grapes and instead focused their work on the way Champagne was created in France. As a result, Cava was born.
With a vast multitude of drinking spots to enjoy a truly authentic experience, we’ve listed the best places to enjoy una copa de cava in the city.
La Vinya del Senyor
This bar is located in the trendy and chic El Born area; two words that perfectly describe La Vinya del Senyor. You can find it in the square that’s home to the breath-taking Basílica Santa María del Mar, giving the bar some fantastic views of the cathedral. As well as a great location, the servers at La Vinya are friendly but knowledgeable, and will love to help you out on your journey for the perfect glass of cava…
Plaça de Santa Maria 5, 08003 Barcelona
Xampañería Can Paxiano
La Xampañería is located close to the beach in the Barceloneta neighbourhood. As well as being family owned, this bar lets you try a variety of different cavas before ordering your favourite by the bottle. The bar is usually full to the brim, but don’t let the crowds put you off. La Xampañería is well worth the wait (just ask the many locals inside)…
Carrer de la Reina Cristina 7, 08003 Barcelona
Like La Xampañería, La Deliciosa is also close to the beach. We recommend the Sangría de Cava or the Signat Brut (both go well with some tantilisingly tasty Mediterranean bites). What’s more, all this can be enjoyed with some incredible ocean views of the city shores.
Passeig Marítimo de Barceloneta, 08039, Barcelona
El Rincón Del Cava
This bar is slightly cheaper than our previous favourites, but by all means just as nice! It’s located in the heart of the Poble Sec neighbourhood and offers drinkers delicious cava and a warm friendly atmosphere. But remember to smile as you drink because the owners love to photograph their customers and add the photos to their wall!
Carrer de Blasco de Garay 53, 08004, Barcelona
On the other end of the financial spectrum, Monvínic is a more expensive affair. But you certainly get what you pay for. With knowledgeable bar staff on hand to match the best cava to your tastes, this luxury establishment located in the chic Eixample district is sure to tick off all your cava-tasting needs!
Carrer de la Diputació, 249, 08007 Barcelona
